December Daily // Paint Samples Album

I have been hearing a lot about December Daily ablums/books since November. At first, I dismissed the idea since I am not a scrap booker or a project lifer. However, as Thanksgiving got closer I realized that I didn’t have to do DD in that way. I could do my own take on it. And since I am a Get Messy Girl and already in the art grove, it seemed like a great idea to try my hand at the mixed media approach to DD.

That is until I received my book, a red Leuchtturm1917 journal. I was really excited to start working on it and I already had several events I wanted to include. Then as I worked and then worked some more, I realized that this book was not the book I had thought. In fact, it wasn’t for me at all. The pages just didn’t react the way I felt comfortable.
That meant that on December 2nd, I had to come up with an entire new idea for my December Daily album. I had several ways I thought I could do it. At first I was thinking that I would join the rest and buy myself a Sn@p binder. I was thinking it would be a neat test run for the New Year and if I would really enjoy project life. Nevertheless, there was another idea that had me thinking about something completely different.
I kept thinking about the stack of long Behr paint samples in Christmas colors I had been hoarding. They were sitting right in front of me just whispering to me all the goodness they could hold. So I picked them up and messed with them. Somehow in the ten minute I had been playing with them, an idea sprung. I could stick them together long ways and leave a pocket area, perfect for 3x5 index cards for journaling or extra pictures from the day. I could than bind them together with binder rings.
So far I see some great advances to using these:
  1. They are FREE, so pretty much that means a very very cheap project. My kinda deal.
  2. They are already colored. That was a draw back in my journal because I would have to color or cut paper for every single background. This would be very time consuming and I want every sec I can to enjoy this season.
  3. The weight is perfect for mix media. I can gesso over it and go to town with whatever I choose.
  4. The size is great. Granted a little small but during the busy month, small works best because then I am not overwhelmed with having to fill a page.
  5. I can glue them together so I have a pocket. Having a pocket gives me TONS more room to play with. For days that I am out and about taking a lot of photos, I just print them out and slip them into the pocket. Or if I have a lot to write about that day I can write back and front of a cheap index card. Plus slipping my journaling into the pocket makes it kinda private.
The reason you don’t see them already hole-punched and on binder rings is because I don’t have one of those fancy small hole-punches. I only have the regular binder one so I will be going out soon to buy one. However, I am not sure how well this will work so next week I might have something completely different. Haha.

Get Messy // November Prompt

This month prompt was to pick a word that describes you right now. When I heard the that only one word entered my head: FIRE. I don't know how to put into words all the reasons I choose word. I think the second page I did best describes how I used to feel and why I choose my word.

The poem reads
Requiescat by Oscar Wilde
"Read lightly, she is near
Under the snow,
Speak gently, she can hear
The daisies grow.

All her bright golden hair
Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
Fallen to dust.

Lily-like, white as snow,
She hardly knew
She was a woman, so
Sweetly she grew.

Coffin-board, heavy stone,
Lie on her breast,
I vex my heart alone,
She is at rest.

Peace, peace, she cannot hear
Lyre or sonnet,
All my life's buried here,
Heap earth upon it."

PS This is the last time you will see a Get Messy post. The group will be taking Demember off for the holidays. BUT don't worry I will still be sharing something extra special during those Thursdays in Dec AND the group will be announcing something special.

Get Messy // Fun Day

Each of these pages backgrounds were created by watching a YouTube video. I really liked how they turned out and I can't wait to try the technique again. I don't have much to say this week since the cold bug and cold weather hit my house. Therefore, lack of sleep and coughing has been happening. Luckily, the pages are colorful enough to speak for me. Hope you staying warm!

Get Messy // Learning in Art

After journaling out my feeling last week in my art journal, I came to a realization. I can use my art journal for more then just art. Yes, I get that many others have done this. I've seen hundreds like this but for some reason in my head, my art journal was more for art then anything. After last week, it was like the flood gates opened. I started to look at my art journal as my brain, an entintion of myself. A place where I can be free. Now, I am even more excited about creating art and I can't wait til the new year because I am going to start fresh with a new art journal.

Are you thinking about the new year yet? Have you picked out your goals yet?

Get Messy // Sad Pumpkin

Last week was Halloween and the end of October. I can't believe how fast it flew. I was soo busy. Yet I couldn't help feeling sad. I didn't get to do any of what I really wanted. But that is the good thing about art journaling. I can take my emotions and create with them. I can even journal with my art. That's what I did here. After I created my page, I realized that although I didn't get to do what I wanted I got do to do alot of other things. I hung out with my family, cleaned and organized. My month was great in those terms. I just needed to art journal to see that.

What did you do for Halloween? How was your month of October?
Do you keep an art journal? What about a normal journal?  If so had you ever experienced where creating helped you work things out? Let me know all about it below. I love hearing art stories.

Swapoween '14 Reveal

I knew that October was going to be a busy month for me and my family. I had my grandmother fly down, James was working alot and I knew the cold weather would be upon us. I didn't know how much of my Halloween wish list would get marked off so when I read Chaotic Goddess Swap was doing an swap for Halloween I was all excited. It was the perfect way to celebrate, even if I missed everything else (which I did).

I was parnted with Cheltee from Little Bitty Changes. She was an amazing swap partner. I loved getting to know her through emails. I am very excited about continuing our friendship. Above is what she sent me for our swap. I love everything. Look at that adorable Oogie Boogie Man mug she made me in the top corner! Everything was great. =]

I can't wait to stay friends with Cheltee. I also will be joining this swap again for next year. Did you have any Halloween plans? Did you join in a swap? Let me know below!

Get Messy // October Prompt

When I heard this prompt, I knew how easy it would be choose many things to be grateful for. Yet, I was thinking about a post from another Get Messy Girl, where she writes about being happy or sad. What she is really happy about or really sad about. So for this month’s prompt I took the more philosophical approach.

I have been thinking over that and asking myself questions: What am I thankful for? What am I truly happy about? Or sad about? Where does happiness come from? What is better happiness or being content? That is when I realize one sentence could sum up all of that. If you can’t be happy about the basics of survival (food, water, shelter—no matter the condition), then nothing will make you happy because you don’t appreciate the basics. Everything else in life beside food, shelter and water is extra. You don’t need the extra to get by, really—they just add to life. Those have been my thoughts for the past month and I plan on sharing a full post on all these thoughts next week.

P.S. It's my 10th week! Yay. =]

Get Messy // Magic

With Halloween three weeks away, I can't help but think about it. I am soo excited. I made Halloween hair bows with some fabric I bought at a thrift store. In one of the patterns wizard hats kinda like the ones I painted. I was so inspired by it. Then when one of other Get Mess Girl posted a page with the lyrics of "Kiss Like a Rose" and I knew I had to combine the two. I always think of magic when I hear that song. I am so happy with how it turned out.

Happy Early Halloween!! Do you have any plans for this month or on Halloween? Please, let me know below.
